Storm acquire Coles and Giangulano from Canmore ahead of AJHL trade deadline

Two days before the AJHL trade deadline, the Grande Prairie Storm have made a move.

The Storm announced Wednesday that they have traded Lukas Jirousek and Zachary Cunningham to the Canmore Eagles in exchange for Carter Coles, Max Giangulano, and future considerations.

Coles is in his fourth season in the AJHL. He has spent his entire career with the Eagles. He has 10 points in 37 games this season.

“Carter is a steady presence on the blueline and plays a quiet, effective game,” said Interim Head Coach Ryan Aasman. “He is a mobile, first-pass player that defends with an effective stick in the defensive zone. Adding Carter gives our younger defense core experience as Carter is already used to playing effective minutes. We are excited to see Carter’s compete level and leadership in our line-up.”

Giangualano has spent three seasons in the AJHL. Last year he had a breakout year with 44 points in 54 games. This season he has slowed down, registering 14 points in 35 games.

“Max is a dynamic forward that can play centre and the wing. He not only has a high IQ level, but Max’s compete level is what attracted Mark and I to acquire him. He is hard to play against, dynamic with the puck and loves to create and go to the dirty areas. We are excited to acquire both Carter and Max and hope the change will improve their development.”

Cunningham, who is from Grande Prairie, leaves the team after two seasons with the Storm. He registered seven points in 28 games this season.

“Zach went through ups and downs this season after having a good rookie season, and that happens in the course of an athlete’s career. Zach is a guy that showed up to work every single day and is always hungry to learn. We hope a change of scenery helps Zach find his game again because he deserves it. Zach was a great Storm player and we can’t thank him enough for his work at the rink and in the community,” says Aasman.

Jirousek was in his first season with the Storm, finishing with 12 points in 29 games this season. He played for the Olds Grizzlys last season.

“Lukas was a great Storm. It was a hard trade to make. Luke is a great teammate and very coachable. He was a pleasure to work with this season. He was very committed to his work in the community and I thank Luke for everything he did for us,” says Aasman.
