Tax scam back in the Peace Country

Jan 9, 2020 | 1:24 PM

High Prairie RCMP have sent out a warning about phone scams.

Mounties say they have had several reports recently about scammers claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency and the RCMP, telling people they owed money on their taxes that had to be paid as soon as possible.

In one case, the scammer said the scam target could buy Google Play cards to repay what they claimed was owing.

Police say something called “call spoofing”, where the call display shows a local number of the actual CRA or RCMP number is also being used by thieves.

Mounties remind people that no legitimate agency would ask for payment in gift cards, that they should not share any personal information, and to not be pushed into any decisions.

They also recommend getting as much information os possible, saying you will call them back, then check their information against what is included in things like the web site of the agency involved.
