Local company looks to help Australian wildlife affected by the fires

A local company from Beaverlodge is looking to lend a hand for the wildlife that have been displaced or injured by the wildfires in Australia.

The quilting company Around The Block is looking for volunteers this Saturday to help make pouches for baby animals that are being affected by the raging fires.

“It’s a huge devastation in Australia, and we were thinking one little thing that we could do was make pouches. I know it seems small, but they really need the help,” said Erin Kyle the owner of Around The Block.

It takes around 10 minutes to make one pouch. Kyle is hoping that volunteers could make around 100 pouches that come in several different sizes.

As of right now, there are only three or four people committed to helping with the project, however, Kyle expects there to be around 10 ladies helping out on Saturday.

The pouches will be donated to various organizations and centres in Australia that are helping asset with animal rescue in the region. Many of them need pouches due to excessive demand.

If you’re looking to get involved in volunteering to help create the pouches, you can head to the Around the Block Facebook page, contact Kyle and she will be able to get you set up.

Around The Block is known for doing charitable projects. The company regularly has volunteers make quilts for charities like the Make-A-Wish foundation.

Kyle says she has 50 quilts in her car and leaves for Edmonton on January 14. If you knit your own quilt, and would like to donate it, you can drop it off at the shop by January 13 and it will make its way to Edmonton.

All the quilts go to a child in need through the foundation.
