Two Grande Prairie men facing charges after break and enter and mail theft

Jan 15, 2020 | 12:22 PM

Two Grande Prairie men are facing break and enter and theft of mail charges.

On January 9, RCMP got a call from a resident who reported a break-in at an apartment building in South Avondale. The suspects, after gaining entry to the building, then broke into mailboxes in the lobby.

RCMP received a call from witnesses who identified the suspects after surveillance photos were posted to social media. Police then obtained a search warrant after further investigation.

Police found and seized pieces of mail, vehicle registration documents, government identification, counterfeit Canadian and American money and substances believed to be crystal methamphetamine.

Twenty-two-year-old Austin Haynes and 24-year-old Aaron Paul, both of Grande Prairie, have been charged with the following:

  • 12 counts of possession of stolen property
  • Theft of mail
  • Two counts of possession of counterfeit currency
  • Break and enter
  • Mischief
  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Illegal possession of a government document

Haynes is also facing a charge of failing to comply with a probation order, and Paul is facing an additional charge of failing to comply with a peace bond.

Haynes was on probation after pleading guilty last spring to a reduced charge of attempted accessory to manslaughter after the December 2017 shooting death of 16-year-old Hannah Sutton.

Hayes was given 23 months time served in jail, one-year probation, and a 10-year firearm prohibition.

Haynes and Paul have been released from custody following a Judicial Interim Release hearing, under conditions that include no contact with each other.

Haynes and Paul are both scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on January 29, 2020.

RCMP are thanking the public for their assistance with this investigation.
