Lackadaisical effort for Storm in loss to Camrose

Jan 18, 2020 | 9:39 AM

The Camrose Kodiaks scored four unanswered goals, including two on the power play, to knock off the Grande Prairie Storm 4-1 in AJHL play on Friday night.

Brett Meerman opened the scoring with a power play goal halfway through the first period. It was the sixth goal of the season for the Red Deer native, and the fifth over his last nine games.

But the Kodiaks would take over the game in the middle frame, out-shooting the Storm 12-9 and getting power play goals from Lane Brockhoff and Connor Brock to take a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

“The last four or five games, we have not given up a power play goal. It was really strong there for a while, but now it is in an ebb and we have to try to find a way to improve it.” said Storm coach Ryan Aasman after the game. “We found a way to score a power play goal but I think we got too complacent and thought the rest of the game was going to be easy.”

“We needed guys to step up. We had too many passengers (Friday night).”

One of the Kodiaks’ power play goals came during a five minute man advantage, after Nathaniel Bierd was given a checking from behind major after a hit on Camrose forward Brett Weischorster.

Aasman admits his club had a hard time getting anything going after that extended penalty kill.

“(Camrose) is a heavy team, well structured, well coached. We could not find ways to get those second and third chances on net when pucks were lying around in the slot. We have to go to those dirty areas, and we did not do a good enough job of boxing out in front of our own net.”

Camrose would add two more in the third, as Erik Miller and Cody Laskosky (empty netter) would round out the scoring.

The Storm will get a few days of practice in before starting a busy stretch that will see them play four games in five nights.

After visiting Spruce Grove and Lloydminster on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Storm will return home to face Fort McMurray for a pair on Friday and Saturday.
