Local athletes contribute to record Canada Games medal haul for Alberta

Mar 4, 2019 | 11:55 AM

A release from the province says Team Alberta had a historic showing at the Canada Games in Red Deer.

Alberta finished third in the standings with 100 medals, 36 of them gold. Both totals set records.

A couple of Peace Country athletes helped Alberta to that record-breaking haul.

Brooklyn Tews of Beaverlodge and the women’s hockey team beat Quebec 2-1 in Saturday’s gold medal game.

Grande Prairie’s Michelle Grisales won an individual bronze in judo. Alberta won gold in the team event. Grisales got a medal but did not actually compete in the team event.

That release from the province adds that Alberta also won the awards for greatest improvement and for the team that best combined competitive performance with cooperation, sportsmanship, and fair play.

The last time the Canada Winter Games were held in Alberta was in Grande Prairie in 1995.
