A trio of Peace Country musicians have been nominated alongside the likes of Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes and Avril Lavigne for Canadian music awards.

Grande Prairie’s Tenille Townes and Celeigh Cardinal, as well as Spirit River’s Aaron Goodvin, have been nominated for 2020 JUNO Awards, following the unveiling of the full list of nominees Tuesday morning.

Townes is up for two awards: Breakthrough Artist of the Year, as well as Songwriter of the Year. Goodvin is nominated for Country Album of the Year for his album “V”, while Cardinal is up for Indigenous Artist of the Year.

For Townes, this adds to a busy time of accomplishments and milestones. After singing the Canadian national anthem at the NHL All-Star game this past Saturday, her latest single “Jersey on the Wall (I’m Just Asking)” was listed as the number one song on the Canadian Country Music charts on Monday. The honour comes exactly one year to the week that Townes first topped the charts with “Somebody’s Daughter”.

Townes is a multi-time award winner, including a clean sweep at the 2019 Canadian Country Music Awards, where she went four for four on award wins, including Single and Video of the Year for “Somebody’s Daughter”, along with Female Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year.

Meanwhile, Cardinal is nominated following the recent release of her album “Stories from a Downtown Apartment”.

Cardinal was just back in Grande Prairie on January 19, where she and the rest of the Celeigh Cardinal Trio played the GP Live Theatre. She will be back in the Swan City on February 13 playing, as well as speaking, at the Indigenous Iskwew+ in Leadership Symposium.

The awards show goes on Sunday, March 15 at the Sasktel Centre in Saskatoon. It will be televised on CBC.
