Pace Centre to host Consent Event Open House

Jan 29, 2020 | 2:31 PM

The Pace Community Support, Sexual Assault, & Trauma Centre is hosting their first Consent Event open house on Thursday, January 30.

Buffy MacIntosh, Funds Development Coordinator for Pace, says the event is for people to learn more about what the agency offers in the community, and to learn more about consent.

“(And) maybe learn a little bit more about sexual violence, relationships, boundaries, consent. There are some startling statistics around what people know around consent in Canada, so we’re really wanted to take the opportunity to maybe impart a little bit of knowledge around that.”

Pace offers counselling, education, and resources for people impacted by sexual violence, crisis and trauma.

The event’s theme is “Do You Consent To Be My Valentine.”

“We wanted the open house to be more of a reflection of the work that we do as an agency, and so we wanted to tie it to something that was about relationships, about connection (and) about a lot of the work that we do in supporting people is around relationships and non-consent et cetera,” said MacIntosh. “So, we thought Valentine’s Day was a nice opportunity to make it friendly and make it approachable for community members, but also to have some conversations around difficult subjects.”

The event is free and runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pace office, and MacIntosh says there will be a tasting buffet and “Consent Event Trivia”. She adds that the event is family-friendly.

Registration is available online prior to the event, and those registered will be entered into a grand prize draw to win a one-night stay in a King Deluxe Room with brunch for two at the Pomeroy Hotel & Conference Centre.
