Storm look to snap out of funk against Crusaders

Jan 31, 2020 | 1:13 PM

The Grande Prairie Storm returns home to Revolution Place for a weekend series as they welcome one of the AJHL’s top teams, the Sherwood Park Crusaders.

The Storm come into this weekend series with the Crusaders in a bit of a January funk. Since their big upset win on January 12 against the Crusaders, the Storm have dropped six of their last seven games only picking up four points during stretch.

“There’s too much complacency. There’s lots of good stuff and habits that are starting to come through, but at the end of the day, we got to win hockey games, and that’s just as simple as it can get. It starts with practices, daily habits and that’s got to happen every single day,” said Storm Head Coach Ryan Aasman.

Sherwood Park comes into tonight’s tilt sitting comfortably first place in the AJHL North Division with 80 points. There is talent all over the place on this team.

The Cru are led by the AJHL’s top two-point scorers in Arjun Atwal and Carter Savoie. Atwal leads the league with 86 points, while Savoie leads the league in goals with 44 in just 43 games. They also feature defenseman Michael Benning, who leads all d-man in points with 60 points.

Savoie and Benning are both ranked prospects by NHL central scouting and are likely to get drafted at the upcoming NHL draft in Montreal this summer.

In goal, the Cru will likely ice Carter Gylander in one of the games, who is a seventh-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 2019 and is committed to Colgate University. Gylander leads the league in wins with 25 and carries a .926 save percentage.

Aasman knows that there is little room for error on this homestand.

“We have got to be ready to go to work tonight. All that matters is getting a W and we’ve got to find a way to get it done today and tomorrow,” said Aasman.

Puck drop for this weekend’s games is set for 7:30 p.m. at Revolution Place.
