A local Grande Prairie cheerleading team is leaving Calgary on a high.

The Gymniks All-Star Cheerleading team had four teams travel to Calgary to participate in the PAC Battle of Champions tournament. The weekend tournament brought teams together from across the entire province to compete.

In the end, the Senior Ambush team from Grande Prairie won gold at the end of the weekend, and was voted on as one of the top four teams to watch in the entire tournament over the weekend.

Because the group finished first place in the tournament, they also received a bid to compete in a U.S. finals competition. The team can choose to participate in competitions located in Las Vegas, Chicago, Dallas, Virginia Beach and Rhode Island over the course of the 2020 season.

Lindsay Morrison is the coordinator for the cheer club, and spoke about the significance of the victory.

“It’s huge for our club. This year I feel like we’ve done so good in two competitions that we are really starting to put a name on the map for us. People are starting to ask, ‘where are you guys from?’ when they see our Gymniks logo. We’ve gotten a lot of positive recognition from the cheerleading community.”

With the positive result this week, the team could also receive a bid for the Summit tournament in the United States. That tournament is essentially the world cheerleading championships and takes place annually in Orlando, Florida.

The group will find out Monday night at 6:30 p.m. if they will be invited to attend the event at the end of the season.

The three other teams from Grande Prairie also did great.

The Youth 1 team “Sergeants” ended up getting third place in their division, the “Snipers” team finished in fourth and the “Code Teal” team also finished fourth in their division.
