2020 Oscar-nominated short films to be screened this weekend in Grande Prairie

Grande Prairie will have the chance to take in the 2020 Oscar-nominated short films on the big screen on Saturday, February 8.

The Oscar Shorts Date Night, put on by the Reel Shorts Film Festival, will be showing both the nominated animated and live-action short films.

“To make it more fun we have prizes for people who watch and then predict which one they think will win the Academy Award,” said Terry Scerbak, Director and Programmer of the Reel Shorts Film Festival. “Which this year is on Sunday, so we’ll show the films on Saturday and people can see if they guessed correctly on Sunday and (they) could possibly win some lovely prizes, including gift cards from the Prairie Mall.”

2020’s nominees were announced in late January, which meant they only had three weeks to collect all of the short films. She adds that though there may be animated shorts, they are not meant for children.

“There’s a couple that have some amusing moments, and (with) the animated, there is a nice mix across the animated, definitely not cartoons for children, although there’s a couple of lovely G-rated type films, but overall, the package for animated is PG, and for the live-action, it’s 14-A.”

There are five films in both packages. Animated goes at 3 p.m. at the Grande Prairie Live Theatre. Live-action goes at 7:30 p.m. on the same day.

A prize worth $100 will also be awarded to the Best Red-Carpet Finery during the live-action shorts package screening. There will be other prizes available to win as well.

Trailers for the films and tickets to the event can be found here, at the Reel Shorts website. Tickets will also be available at the door.
