Two community groups receive money from Rotary Club of Grande Prairie

The Rotary Club of Grande Prairie presented cheques to two different community groups Friday.

One for $50,000 went to the Sexsmith and District Museum as part of its grain elevator restoration project.

Lorne Radbourne with the Club’s Large Allocations Committee says the other one, for $14,500, went to the Metis Nation of Alberta Local 1990.

“It was for some materials and supplies for a cultural program that they’re developing to preserve their culture and share their culture with the broader community.”

He says the Committee has criteria for those wanting to apply, and they can give $5 to $50,000 away in total, but applicants usually specify what they are looking for.

“Sometimes we can’t give all, but once in a while we’ll give a little bit more than they ask for because we just think it’s such an important project for the committee.”

Other criteria include how many people it will impact, if they are in good standing financially themselves, and how Rotary would be recognized.

Radbourne says they usually give $500,000 over the four quarters of a year.
