Peace Country athletes claim gold at 2020 Alberta Winter Games

Zone 8 is bringing home a total of 21 medals from the 2020 Alberta Winter Games, which wrapped up on Family Day Monday in Airdrie.

The zone, which represented the majority of Peace Region athletes, claimed seven gold medals, five silver, and nine bronze over the course of competition this past weekend. The games featured over 2,700 athletes and 23 different sports.

Peace Country winners of gold medals came in the sports of Cross Country, Judo, Figure Skating, Artistic Gymnastics, as well as Men’s Hockey.

Coming off her silver medal performance at the Judo nationals last month, Grande Prairie’s Sydney Kinderwater claimed gold in the 52-57 kg category. She defeated Lethbridge’s Rylie Caldwell in the final match on Sunday.

Meantime, Mattea Seitz of Grande Prairie also claimed a gold medal in Judo, with her’s coming in the over 63 kg category. She defeated Edmonton’s Marianna Karas for the gold.

In Cross Country, Grande Prairie’s Aiden Armstrong took home two gold medals, as he claimed first place in both the U14 Male Classic and Sprint. The Armstrong gold medal haul was added to by William Armstrong in the U12 Male Sprint, as he took first prize in that category. William also claimed a bronze in the U12 Male Classic.

Aiden and William then teamed up for the U14 Male Relay, along with Corwin Briere of Grande Prairie, where they claimed a bronze medal with a time of 30:06.3, just under three minutes off the lead.

In the Star 8 Women’s Singles Figure Skating event, Grande Prairie native Rochelle Beekman captured gold with a score of 34.04. She edged out Sylvan Lake’s Karlee Macmillan for top spot.

Another Peace Country gold medal came in the sport of Artistic Gymnastics, with Grande Prairie’s squad taking gold in the JO 7-All Around Team event with a score of 110.875. The team featured Aidan Bouck, Alex Buchta, Melanie Curtis, Samantha Ladwig, Mikaela Lewis, Kaishun Wang, and Sara Zack.

Also, five hockey players Men’s hockey players from the Peace Country captured gold medals playing on teams made up of players from both Zone 7 and Zone 8. Those medals are listed under the Zone 7 total.

In the end, it was Zone 3 (Calgary) which took home the most medals, with a total of 105 (40 gold, 35 silver, and 30 bronze).
