Junior Canucks take game one over Vipers in first game of NWJHL quarterfinals

In their first meeting since the Sundown Oilfield Sexsmith Vipers ended their 22 game losing streak against the Dawson Creek Junior Canucks last Saturday, the Junior Canucks took game one of their best of five NWJHL quaterfinals series 4-3 in overtime.

In the first, the Junior Canucks dominated the shot clock, but it was the Vipers who would get on the board first.

Kail Magnusson would score to give his Vipers a 1-0 lead 6:55 into the period. Dawson Creek outshot Sexsmith 22-8 in the opening frame.

The second period saw the Vipers double their lead. Turner Walker added a shorthanded goal to put his team up 2-0 late in the second.

However, the two-goal lead wouldn’t last for long, as less than a minute after the Walker goal, Dayton Nelson would score for the Junior Canucks to make it 2-1 heading into the second intermission.

In the third, the Junior Canucks were able to find their offensive game and build off Nelson’s second period goal.

Jackson O’Brien tied the game at two 3:47 into the third. Ten minutes later Braden Streich would tally and give the Junior Canucks their first lead of the game, making it 3-2 with 6:55 remaining in the third.

As time ticked down with the Vipers goalie pulled, Wyatt Collins would score the tying goal for the Vipers with seven seconds remaining in the game and force overtime.

Overtime saw the Junior Canucks pull out the win, with Nelson earning his second goal of the game to give his team a 1-0 lead in the series.

Both teams rematch Friday in game two at the Sexsmith Arena, the puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
