Former Mayor Hugh Impey remembered for community involvement

Feb 20, 2020 | 1:13 PM

Former alderman and mayor of Grande Prairie, Hugh Impey, passed away last week on February 11 at the age of 86.

On Wednesday, a memorial service was held for Impey, and the flags in front of City Hall flown at half-staff.

Impey was also heavily involved in Rotary, and he received a “Service Above Self” award by Rotary International in 2006 for his work with the Rotary International Foundation.

Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given says Impey’s passing is a great loss to the community.

“Hugh had really contributed to not just his professional field in surveying, and not just Grande Prairie through his work on City Council and volunteerism in the community, but also really globally, as he worked through Rotary to support other communities all around the globe.”

His family moved to Grande Prairie in 1965, where he partnered with two others to create HIW Surveys, where he stayed until his retirement in 1997.

Impey served as Alderman from 1971 to 1979 and was Mayor from 1980 to 1983.
