Grande Prairie Curling Club excited about hosting Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling

On Thursday morning, it was announced that the City of Grande Prairie and the Coca-Cola Centre will be hosting the Kioti Tractor Tour Challenge as part of the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling from November 3-8, 2020.

The stop is one of six on the tour, other stops include Sarnia, Chestermere, Las Vegas, Toronto and another location to be named at a later date.

The Pinty’s tournament coming to Grande Prairie came with a bit of luck, says Serge Martin, Chairman of the Board for the Grande Prairie Curling Centre.

“Another venue backed out on Rogers and our name came forward, followed by them reaching out to us see if we could pull it together in a little less time than ideal. Everything seems to be coming together fantastically so far.”

The five-day tournament presents an opportunity for curlers in Grande Prairie and curling fans throughout the Peace Region.

“We’ll hopefully have five or six spot exemptions for local teams to take part, and also to have the best curlers in the world in our city means a ton,” said Martin.

“People are already calling and looking for tickets. I think there will be a fantastic turnout from across the Peace Region to come watch some of the best curling around.”

Martin says that the intent for the tournament is to use both the North and South rinks at the Coca-Cola Centre, to accommodate the 60 teams.

A date for when tickets will go on sale for the tournament has not yet been announced, however Martin says he thinks they could go on sale sometime in March.

All the other details around events during the tournament are also expected to be released sometime in March.
