Grande Prairie Mayor hopes new labour assessment will show the needs of employers and employees

Feb 22, 2020 | 7:00 AM

The County, MD of Greenview and City of Grande Prairie have partnered with the Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce for a regional labour assessment.

“We want to ensure that the community is well-served, obviously by having the right educational opportunities available to the local population,” said Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given. “and we want to ensure that the business community is well-served by knowing that when they’re looking for workers in specialized fields or with special skills, that they’re going to be available here.”

The Chamber says they hope to be able to foster a more competitive business market for the region, and to be able to solve the issues the market may be facing.

Larry Gibson, Board Chair for the Chamber of Commerce, says that they are hoping to gain a community perspective, as well as regional.

“So that the differences maybe between Grande Cache and the City of Grande Prairie and even over to Valleyview, they may differ, so we want to get those really drilled down specifically to our region so it’s more of a localized effort.”

The assessment is set to go throughout the year.
