2020-21 Alberta budget to be unveiled today

Feb 27, 2020 | 5:30 AM

Today is budget day in Alberta.

The provincial government will outline its spending plan for the 2020-21 fiscal year this afternoon.

Finance Minister and GP-Wapiti MLA Travis Toews says while there may be some changes to the four-year plan announced last fall, the goals of the government remain the same.

“We are resolute on bringing financial responsibility to this province and delivering a balanced budget in our first term, so Budget 2020 will work to that end, (and) will accomplish that end.”

Toews says the economy, jobs, and pipelines remain the most important priorities for the UCP government.

He feels Alberta is already seeing impacts from the budget that came in last fall, noting, in particular, a cut to corporate taxes.

“We’ve already seen some additional business investment as a result of that corporate tax reduction. That’s encouraging. We think that this is only the beginning. We believe that in future months and years that we will see a significant, additional investment in this province, and with it, jobs and opportunities for Albertans.”

Toews says the government hopes to look at some transportation needs in this new spending plan.

“Projects that we can move forward. Projects that will attract investment, improve productivity and competitiveness of industry players in the province, and lead to job creation.”

Toews says Highway 40 would be one of those. The province, County of Grande Prairie, and MD of Greenview recently announced an agreement to cost-share the twinning of the 19 kilometres of Highway 40 between Grande Prairie and the Norbord plant. The province hopes to start that work this summer.
