Sexsmith Curling Club excited to host U-18 Alberta Provincial Curling Championship

The Sexsmith Curling Club is hosting the 2020 Alberta U-18 Boys and Girls Provincial Curling Championships. The event runs through Sunday.

The winning team gets a spot in the national championship to be held in Sudbury, Ontario from April 21 to 26

B.J. Clarke is the chairperson of the event and says that fans can expect elite competition.

“What they can come to expect this week is some of the best young curling in all the country. This is the best under-18 curling teams in the Province of Alberta all competing to represent Alberta at the national event.”

There is one team from the Peace Region taking part and that team is Team Sonnenberg.

The foursome curls out of the Sexsmith and Grande Prairie Curling Clubs and has had a strong 2019-20 season.

Team Sonnenberg has qualified for the 2020 Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon which will be held from March 15 to 21. Back in December, they qualified for provincials during a tournament held in Grande Prairie.

Lots of curlers from the Peace Region who’ve played in the provincial tournament have gone on to curl at Canada’s top level.

Some of those names include Daylan Vavrek, a 2011 junior provincial and junior national champion, Kyle Reynolds, and Geoff Walker, the lead for Team Gushue.

Clarke says that the public is encouraged to attend the action throughout the week.

“We have really affordable options. It’s $5 a day to come watch, there’s four draws a day so you get lots of action. As well as you could get a week-long pass with a souvenir program for $20,” said Clarke.

Until Saturday, the Boy’s draw takes place at 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., the Girl’s draws are at 12:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The boy’s semi-finals get underway Saturday at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Girls at 12:30 p.m.

The finals are both set for Sunday with both taking place at 12:30 p.m.
