Grande Prairie Rotary Club hosting Rotary Day on Saturday

Mar 11, 2020 | 5:30 AM

Grande Prairie’s Rotary Club is hosting their annual Rotary Day this Saturday at the D-Coy Armouries.

The day brings together 160 club and community members from around Grande Prairie to help create meals for community members and families in need. People of all ages can be found lending a hand making meals.

In previous years, the club had partnered with an American company and made $100,000 worth of meals for people in need. While the number of meals created was generous, those meals weren’t distributed back into the local community.

“Previously when we did the packaging program, it was taken somewhere else in the world, which is still good to do, but it’s more an international program at that point,” said Tyla Savard, the President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie.

Savard says the club has partnered with a Canadian company this year and plans to create 30,000 meals for those in need. This year, the club also gets to pick and choose where the meals go to.

“That $10,000 worth of food goes to stay within our community, feed our kids that are hungry and help support families that are going through a rough time in our area. We’re also going to be sending some of the packages up north into the Yukon and Whitehorse area because there are a lot of communities struggling up there too. We want to share within our local background,” said Savard.

The meals created will consist of foods like red lentils, rice, dehydrated vegetables, vitamin packages, and a recipe card.

“It’s nutritious for families and were adding some recipe cards in each package so it’s not the same boring meal again,” said Savard.

The event gets underway Saturday morning and goes from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with lunch being served at 11:30 a.m.

The general public is invited to join the crew for lunch and chili on a bun is being served. Savard says that it’s a great way to meet people and find out more about the Rotary Club.
