Peace River announces facility closures and event cancelations

Mar 16, 2020 | 12:47 PM

The Town of Peace River is the latest town to announce facility closures and cancel events due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Peace Regional Pool, Baytex Energy Centre, and Peace River Museum, Archives and Mackenzie Centre are all closed to the public effective today, March 16.

Autumn Hulme the Information Officer for the Town of Peace River says that the measures had to be taken.

“These facilities are gathering places, they hold classes, they’re hard to maintain cleanliness and guarantee that only people that are healthy are coming in. Out of an abundance of caution and seeking to be proactive and careful, we are closing them,” said Hulme.

The Town Office will remain open with regular hours and council meetings will continue for the time being. Hulme says that proper precautions have been put in place.

“We’ve put in place mitigation measures such as distance lines to encourage a one metre separation. We’ve been sanitizing regularly and have hand sanitizer available at the counters,” said Hulme.

Peace River has also canceled their Low-Income Senior’s Tax Filing event scheduled for March 18 at Heritage Towers and is asking anyone affected to call 780-623-1000 to make alternate arrangements.

The program itself is still going forward, but the city is asking that people call instead of attending in person.

Those who had rental space booked will be contacted regarding refunds.

Information on the Town’s preparation, provision of services, the status of facilities, or other announcements can be found on their website and will be shared on their social media platforms.

At this moment there is no timetable for when the facilities will re-open.
