Grande Prairie food bank needing donations during COVID-19 outbreak

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to hit Alberta and the Peace Region, the Grande Prairie food bank is in need of donations.

After COVID-19 was announced as a pandemic earlier in the week, store shelves have emptied in the city and donations have dropped at the food bank.

“There’s been less donations in the boxes and the bins since the announcement Monday,” said Peter Kim the Executive Director of the Salvation Army.

The food bank will be getting some much-needed help from the Government of Alberta, as it was announced Tuesday that charities, including food banks, would be getting $60 million in support so they can help those who are most vulnerable during this time.

However, details on how charities will get that money are still being worked out.

Kim says while store shelves have emptied as people continue to buy in stock, cash donations are normally better for the food bank.

“Monetary donations are actually better at this point because we would be able to work with supermarkets to get items that we need that specifically go into a food hamper. We need to make sure that there is a good supply available,” said Kim.

If you would like to drop off any donations at this time, the food bank asks that you call ahead to inform them that you are coming. The best number to reach them at is 780-532-3720 or email contact@salvationarmy.org

If you would like to make any monetary donations, you can phone 780-538-2848, drop it off at 9615 102 Street or go to the Salvation Army website.
