Farmer’s Market remains open with temporary measures addressing COVID-19

Mar 30, 2020 | 12:56 PM

The Grande Prairie Farmer’s Market is remaining open during the COVID-19 pandemic as an essential business.

Its hours are 4-7 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

The market says local farmers are struggling right now due to the pandemic and it is now offering a Local Farm Variety Box that has items such as eggs and vegetables.

Chelsea Rach, Assistant Manager of the Farmer’s Market, says only food vendors are operating right now, and that they have implemented new measures to protect vendors and the community.

“We’re doing a headcount at the market. That headcount also includes vendors. We also have a board member sitting at the doors handing out gloves, handing out hand sanitizer. The doors are being sanitized in between customers so that it’s safe to come and go, as well as we’ve added additional hand sanitizing stations at the back of the market so you can wash your hands at one of those temporary hand sinks.”

Rach says they are doing what they can to support vendors and farmers with these temporary measures, even if non-food vendors cannot be there.

“It’s not that we’ve sat down and said that this is the way it’s going to be forever, it’s just what we’re doing in the interim. Most of them (other vendors) have decided on their own to not be here, as they’re not an essential service, and a lot of vendors are older too and have considerations with their health and have decided to stay away.”

She adds that now is the most important time to support local farmers and vendors.
