Warkentin calls on federal government to stop planned carbon tax hike

Grande Prairie–Mackenzie MP Chris Warkentin is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to stop the federal government’s planned carbon tax increase on April 1.

In a statement released on Monday, Warkentin said now is not the time to push an added expense on tax payers

“Peace Country residents cannot afford to pay more taxes during this crisis,” Warkentin said. “Small businesses, farmers, workers and contractors are all feeling extreme strain and this tax will put more hardworking locals out of work.”

Warkentin also says he’s seen businesses suffer during this tough time.

“We are seeing revenue dry up for small businesses, forcing them to reduce their operations and lay off employees,” said Warkentin. “An increased carbon tax from the Trudeau government will only make life more expensive at a time when uncertainty is at an all-time high and family incomes are dropping.”

The federal carbon tax is set to rise on April 1 to $30 per tonne.

Back at the end of February, the province of Alberta won a decision in the Alberta Court of Appeal which ruled that the levy is unconstitutional. The decision will now go before the federal Court of Appeal.
