GPAC players earn AMHL honours as season officially concludes

As the Alberta Midget Hockey League officially cancelled the remainder of its playoffs on Friday, a few GPAC Ernie’s Sports Storm players received high honours to mark the end of the season.

Newly committed Grande Prairie Storm forwards Ty Toews and Hudson Foley each came away with some top recognition.

Toews was named a second team all-star on Friday. The 18-year-old winger was the top scorer for the Major Midget Storm this season, posting 14 goals and 19 assists in 32 games.

Meanwhile, Foley was named the recipient of the Richard Warwick Memorial Award for the 2019-20 season. The award is given to the player that best exemplifies ability, leadership and dedication to the game, both on and off the ice.

The winner is chosen from letters sent in by each team, nominating a player for the award while explaining why they deserve the honour.

The 17-year-old forward, who served as an assistant captain this season, posted 10 goals and 17 assists in 31 games.

A Storm player was also named a recipient of a $2500 scholarship through AMHL scholarship program, that being forward Cameron Wiebe. The 17-year-old Fairview product appeared in 31 games this season, posting five goals and seven points, while adding a goal and an assist in the Storm’s postseason series against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers.

The Storm’s season ended in heart breaking fashion, falling in overtime to those Rangers in the decisive game five of their second round series. The Storm finished the regular season in second place in the Dodge (North) division, with a record of 17-13-2.

The league executive also announced that since the season has ended prior to the championship trophy being handed out, the St. Albert Nektar Raiders have been named champions of the Dodge Division. The Calgary Buffaloes were then named the champions of the South.
