Hospital Visit Restrictions

No visitors allowed at hospitals: Hinshaw

Apr 3, 2020 | 6:49 PM

Alberta Health Services is putting more aggressive measures in hospitals to help stifle the spread of the novel coronavirus.

During the daily COVID-19 update on Friday, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said they will no longer be allowing patients to have in-person visitors

She adds very few exceptions will be made on the matter.

“Please plan to support loved ones in hospital with virtual visits, instead,” Hinshaw said.

Those exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis according to Hinshaw. She says some of those could be if a child needs to go to the hospital and wants a parent with them, or if a woman is about to give birth.

Hinshaw says AHS will be releasing more details soon as to what exceptions will be made and when.

Prior to Friday’s announcement, AHS was allowing patients one visitor at a time in acute care facilities, excluding children.

As of April 3, there have been 74 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 in Alberta and 39 of those people are currently in hospital.

15 are currently admitted into an Intensive Care Unit, while 24 in total have been to ICU in the province.

“We need to move forward together, even though we are physically distanced, to ensure we take care of each other during this time.”
