County of Grande Prairie announces updates to 2020 Property Tax Payment Plan

Apr 9, 2020 | 12:00 PM

The County of Grande Prairie has announced its updated plan regarding property tax payments for 2020.

Earlier this week council approved keeping its property tax deadline date for June 30, 2020, however, they will be forgiving tax penalties for any late payments made before October 30.

Reeve for the County of Grande Prairie Leanne Beaupre, explained why County Council decided to keep its initial tax deadline date, but extend the tax penalty deadline.

“By keeping the date of June 30, they (County staff) are able to process the assessment form and send it out in time so that people have an idea (of what they owe). If they’re able to pay it, we encourage them to pay that, because it helps with the County of Grande Prairie’s cash flow. If they are not, then it gives them the opportunity to pay anytime until October 30 with no penalty.”

If the county shifted the June 30 deadline, they say it would have cost them more money in labour and staff time to send the assessments out a month later.

“This way people will have an idea of what their taxes are regardless of whether they pay them at the end of June or the end of October,” added Beaupre.

In March, unemployment for the Peace Region area moved up by 0.3% from 6.8% to 7.1% (this also includes areas such as Jasper, Banff and Athabasca).

The deadline applies for all classes of taxes, including residential, non-residential and farmland investment.

Beaupre also mentioned that the final county budget will be set next Thursday and Friday. Some members of council will be in attendance at the chamber while the other reeves will attend via video chat.
