City opens new indoor gardening program

Apr 10, 2020 | 7:00 AM

The City of Grande Prairie has opened signups for a new indoor gardening program.

Michelle Gairdner, Manager of the Energy Management and Environmental Services Department, says the program is free for all residents of the city.

“Residents will be able to go onto the Perfect Mind, so on City of GP there’s a link to the Perfect Mind, and then they can register to receive a package, and that package will consist of three packets of seeds 24 peat pellets, which once you get them wet you can put the seed in it.”

The City says the supply kits include seeds for lettuce, tomatoes and chives, and peat pellets.

She says the city will be offering pickup and drop off for the supply kits, with pickup dates set as April 17, and curbside delivery to happen from April 20 to April 21.

Gairdner adds that the program is an opportunity for those who have never gardened before to start, and to give a new hobby to people who are staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“A lot of people are in their houses, they’ve got their kids at home, and this will give something to start looking forward to spring. We will have a second phase that will focus on outdoor, so we thought, having something to do inside is a great way to pass the time.”

She says they have partnered with Jeffrey’s Cafe Co. to provide compostable containers if a household does not have any of their own containers.

The City is also asking people to share photos of their gardens on social media using the hashtag #GPGrows. Gairdner says they will be announcing prizes for those who participate in the social media campaign.
