Water control measures in place to control spring melt on city roads

Apr 11, 2020 | 6:00 AM

The City of Grande Prairie’s transportation department is preparing to control water flow from melting snow on roads across the city.

City staff are working to clear catch basins of any snow and debris, to ensure that water drains properly from roads. Residents are also encouraged to clear basins, but the City advises against trying to clear any areas that have already flooded.

The roads in the city are designed to channel the water into the underground drainage network, and residents are reminded that isolated water flow along roads is expected.

The City is also reminding residents of the safety risk associated with storm ponds, especially as the weather warms.

The thickness of the ice on storm ponds can vary from one spot to the next due to the water flow from storm pipes draining into the pond. This causes the ice to become unstable, and can potentially be dangerous to walk on.

The City says storm water ponds located throughout the city include, but are not limited to:

  • Ivy Lake
  • Crystal Lake
  • Crystal Lake Storm Facility
  • O’Brien Lake
  • Pinnacle Ridge and Pinnacle West
  • Royal Oaks North
  • Bickell’s Pond (Summerside)
  • Westgate East
  • Signature Falls

The City also reminds resident that, under the Use of Public Lands Bylaw, skating and hockey is prohibited on storm ponds. Vehicles are also prohibited from accessing these areas.

Meanwhile, the two-week round of residential snow clearing has finished, and parking bans on all permanent snow routes have been lifted.
