GPREP enters longest period of activation in the partnership’s history

Apr 15, 2020 | 3:48 PM

It has been 34 days since the Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership (GPREP) was activated a regional response to the COVID-19 pandemic was started – the longest activation in GPREP’s history.

Previously, the record-holder for longest GPREP activation was 33 days, which was a response to the 2019 Chuckegg Creek Wildfire. The community had over 1,000 evacuees from Northern Alberta come in during that time.

GPREP formed in 2013, and includes the City of Grande Prairie, County of Grande Prairie, the Towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith and Wembley, and the Village of Hythe. GPREP receives its powers through a section of the Alberta Emergency Management Act, a Ministerial Order from Municipal Affairs, and signed agreements and similar emergency management bylaws from the partner municipalities.

The State of Local Emergency has been renewed in all partner municipalities and has been renewed four times since coming into effect in March. States of Local Emergencies must be renewed after seven days under the Alberta Emergency Management Act.

“Previous responses have proven the success of the partnership, and although this emergency is different in many ways, the constant is the dedication of staff and caliber of work to keep our communities safe.” Said GPREP Manager Jennifer Wood, in a release. “Staff have exercised flexibility, and like others across the world, have embraced new ways of operating to respond to the pandemic.”

Currently, GPREP is offering an overnight cot program, isolation supports for those in need, a database of ‘offers to help’, and is monitoring the regional supply chain of goods. They are also offering their Community Care Program.
