OHV ban eased

Off-highway vehicle restrictions being eased in in Forest Protection Areas

Apr 18, 2020 | 4:36 PM

The provincial government now says those who would like to take their off-highway vehicle into a Forest Protection Area are permitted to do so, for the time being.

On Tuesday Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Devin Dreeshen announced that as a wildfire prevention measure, a fire and OHV ban would be put in place starting April 15 in Forest Protection Areas.

However, since there is still snow on the ground in much of those areas, the province says anyone who would like to take their ATV or snow machine into those areas may do so at this time.

The province says restrictions will be eased in as the weather begins to warm up and conditions change.

“An off-highway vehicle restriction in the Forest Protection Area will be reintroduced if there is an increase in the hazard level,” reads a release from Alberta Wildfire. “This phased approach will allow us to address the wildfire risk area-by-area, allowing Albertans the freedom to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible.”

“We will re-evaluate daily.”

Though OHV’s are permitted in Forest Protection Areas, the County of Grande Prairie still has an OHV ban within its boundaries on all public and crown land. Much of the County does not fall within the Forest Protection Area.

The fire ban still remains in place in Forest Protection Areas and provincial parks. More details on the updated bans and areas affected can be found at albertafirebans.ca.
