Grande Prairie businesses among nominees for provincial business awards

Two Grande Prairie businesses have been nominated for an Alberta Business Award of Distinction, handed out by the Alberta Chamber of Commerce.

Both Aztec Engineering and Made By Africans have been nominated for the Mentorship Award of Distinction, which recognizes a company that endorses a strategy of mentorship and learning.

Aztec Engineering president Jason Kolosky says they added a 50 person classroom as part of their office expansion a few years ago.

“What that allows us to do is to bring in one trainer, and pay for one person’s travel, meals, and accommodations, and then have our employees attend. We have also invited a lot of our clients, vendors and industry partners, and in some cases opened some of these courses up to the public.”

Kolosky says having two Grande Prairie businesses nominated for this award speaks to the fact that our city is a community that is interested in investing in it’s personnel to carry mentorship forward.

Meanwhile, Made By Africans founder Ejibola Adetokunbo-Taiwo says she created the e-commerce platform business three years ago to not only help African entrepreneurs create and maintain an online store, but also to empower women to get involved in technology-related business.

“One of the things I told myself is that I am going to make sure that I have initiated to empower women, along the way of doing the business, because I felt it was essential.”

Adetokunbo-Taiwo previously won a mentorship award from the Grande Prairie Chamber of Commerce.

The Alberta Business Awards of Distinction are scheduled to be presented on June 19th at the Renaissance Edmonton airport Hotel.
