Street sweeping operations begin in Grande Prairie

The City of Grande Prairie has started its street sweeping and dust suppression operations.

From 10:00 p.m. Sunday through 10:00 p.m. Friday, City crews will be out sweeping roadways, medians, concrete barriers, boulevards, and City trails. The City’s street cleaning fleet consists of four roadway sweepers, one conveyer sweeper, two sidewalk/trail sweepers, a bobcat with a specialized attachment, and two tandem trucks.

They will be operating 24 hours a day, collecting debris like mud, dirt, gravel and leaves, which will then be discarded at the Aquatera landfill .

Street sweepers only travel at a speed of about five to 10 kilometres per hour, and the public is asked to be patient when on the road with the crews.

The street sweeping operations are expected to continue through to late May.

Meanwhile, the City is now accepting Dust Suppression Applications from residents and business owners who’s property is adjacent to gravel roads.

Successful applicants will see City crews spray a combination of calcium chloride treatment on the road, which will stop gravel dust from blowing up, which can cause driving hazards.

The Dust Suppression Application costs $440 dollars for residential, and $660 for commercial properties, per 100 metres of gravel road.

The City says that though crews will try their best to ensure a treatment is successful, the effectiveness of the dust control agent is not guaranteed, and is subject to variables like weather. Refunds on applications are not accepted once a treatment has been applied.

The City asks that anyone requiring more information contact the Citizen Contact Centre at 780-538-0300.
