2020 Teepee Creek Stampede officially cancelled

Apr 27, 2020 | 12:05 PM

For the first time since its inception, there will be no Teepee Creek Stampede this summer.

The Board of Directors for the event officially announced the cancellation of the 2020 edition of the Stampede Monday morning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was to run from July 9-12.

The news comes following last week’s announcement by Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, that mass gathering restrictions would apply to all summer events and festivals. Other events such as the Calgary Stampede and Edmonton’s K-Days have also been cancelled.

2020 was to be the 104th edition of the Stampede and has been a yearly event in the Peace Country since 1917.

“Its gone consecutively every single year since 1917,” said Steve Meurs, President of the Teepee Creek Stampede Association. “The Stampede did look a little bit different in the early days, it was more of a picnic sports day, but there has been some form of an event in Teepee Creek every year since 1917.”

Meurs says, with the cancellation and the current state of the economy, the Stampede Association is feeling some financial impacts. However, he remains optimistic about the future, and says they plan on bringing the event back next summer.

“There’s a good chance it’s going to be a modified version of what the Stampede has become these last 15 years or so, but you bet your boots we’ll be trying it as soon as we can. We’ll be putting something on for the public to come out and have a good time.”

While the Stampede Association goes back to the drawing board to begin planning next year’s event, Meurs asks the public to stay safe, respect the Province’s rules around COVID-19, and to support local businesses.
