Economic Relaunch

Province hosting telephone town hall Monday for businesses on stage one of relaunch

May 4, 2020 | 11:03 AM

Businesses that received the go-ahead to reopen as early as May 14 are expected to get a clearer picture on how to reopen.

In an invitation sent to the Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce, Premier Jason Kenney is inviting businesses who would like to learn more about stage one of the province’s economic relaunch strategy to take part in a telephone town hall Monday evening.

Phase one businesses include:

  • Retail businesses, such as clothing, furniture, and bookstores. All vendors at farmers’ markets will also be able to operate.
  • Some personal services like hair styling and barbershops.
  • Museums and art galleries.
  • More scheduled surgeries, dental procedures, physiotherapy, chiropractic, optometry, and similar services.
  • Daycares and out-of-school care with limits on occupancy.
  • Summer camps with limits on occupancy. This could include summer school.
  • Cafés, restaurants (minors allowed in liquor-licensed establishments) with no bar service to reopen for public seating at 50 per cent capacity.
  • Post-secondary institutions will continue to deliver courses; however how programs are delivered – whether online, in-person, or a blend – will be dependent on what restrictions remain in place at each relaunch phase.

A number of government representatives will be on the call to help answer any questions, including:

  • Premier Jason Kenney
  • Minister Travis Toews, Treasury Board and Finance and GP-Wapiti MLA
  • Minister Jason Nixon, Environment and Parks
  • Minister Leela Aheer, Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women
  • Minister Jason Copping, Labour and Immigration
  • Minister Tanya Fir, Economic Development, Tourism and Trade
  • Minister Rebecca Schulz, Children’s Services
  • Minister Tyler Shandro, Health
  • Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Chief Medical Officer of Health

“My cabinet colleagues and I will answer your questions about stage one of Alberta’s phased relaunch plan and the role of your business in this stage,” says Kenney in the invitation.

The town hall takes place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Businesses are asked to pre-register for the town hall by 3 p.m. Monday afternoon. A link to do so can be found here.
