Utility payment deferral bill to be tabled as legislature returns Wednesday

EDMONTON – Alberta politicians are to return to the legislature on Wednesday to debate bills tied to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Government house leader Jason Nixon says he will introduce legislation to allow people facing hardship due to the pandemic to delay paying utility bills.

The intent is to allow residential, farm, and small-business customers to put off electricity and natural gas payments until June 18.

Nixon says the government also expects to pass the Emergency Management Amendment Act, which clarifies roles and responsibilities between the province and municipalities during crises.

Another bill would give mobile-home tenants and landlords the same options to resolve disputes as are available for house and apartment rentals.

Nixon says that, later this spring, the government plans to introduce changes to rules on ministerial powers during public-health emergencies.
