Lethbridge area man killed in collision with train near Brooks

BROOKS, AB – Brooks RCMP are reporting a collision between a pickup truck and a train that left one person dead and another with serious injuries.

At approximately 11:35 am on Friday, May 8, emergency crews were called to the railway crossing at Highway 1A and Range Road 14-3 just east of Brooks.

The investigation revealed that a pickup truck with two occupants was heading north on the range road and failed to yield to an oncoming westbound train.

Both occupants were extricated and taken by ambulance to the Brooks Health Center.

“A short time later, the 50 year old passenger from the Lethbridge area, succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital,” Reads a media release from Brooks RCMP. “The 60 year old male driver of the truck, from Lethbridge, was airlifted via Halo Air Ambulance to Foothills Hospital in Calgary with critical, life-threatening injuries.”

The railway was closed for approximately three hours while an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist investigated.

The train sustained minimal damage and there was no loss of cargo. Nobody on the train was injured.

Officials are continuing to investigate.
