Alberta’s COVID-19 recoveries continue climb as province adds 45 new cases

Alberta added 45 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday while the North Zone saw no change in total case numbers from Monday.

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, made the announcement during Tuesday’s COVID-19 update, where she announced that 4,866 of Alberta’s 6,345 total cases (77 per cent of all cases) have recovered from the disease as of May 12. 1,361 remain active, including 26 in the North Zone.

One more Albertan has died from COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll in Alberta to 118.

Case numbers in Peace Region Municipalities as of May 12 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: Three cases (All recovered)
  • County of Grande Prairie: Five cases (One active, four recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: Two cases (One active, one recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 67 cases (Four active, 53 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 36 cases (Three active, 31 recovered, two deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (All recovered)
  • Northern Sunrise County: Three cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: Seven cases (Six recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: One case (Fatal)
  • County of Northern Lights: One case (Recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 32 cases (Nine active, 23 recovered)

The number of hospitalizations remained unchanged from Monday, with 73 Albertans currently in hospital due to COVID-19. Twelve of those individuals are currently in intensive care.

Dr. Hinshaw says 3,173 tests have been completed at the provincial lab over the last 24 hours. 178,208 people have now been tested in Alberta, including 13,692 from northern Alberta.
