Alberta posts 129 new recoveries from COVID-19 while adding 50 new cases

The province added 50 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, while one new case was found in the North Zone.

Recoveries continued to climb on Thursday in Alberta, with 129 new recoveries since the day before to bring the total amount of recovered cases to 5,205, while 1,131 cases are active as of May 14. There was one more death in Alberta over the last 24 hours, coming in Calgary, bringing the death toll from COVID-19 in Alberta to 121.

Of the 228 cases in the North Zone as of May 14, 20 are active, 193 have recovered and 15 have died.

The rise in recoveries has been seen in the hardest-hit areas in the Peace Region, where there are just three active cases in the M.D. of Smoky River area as of Thursday, while the Big Lakes County area has just one active case.

These areas have seen outbreaks at continuing care facilities, including Manoir du Lac in McLennan and J.B. Wood in High Prairie. Ten residents at Manoir du Lac have died from COVID-19, while two have passed away at J.B. Wood from the disease.

Updated case numbers in all Peace Region municipalities as of May 14 can be found below:

• City of Grande Prairie: Three cases (All recovered)
• County of Grande Prairie: Five cases (One active, four recovered)
• M.D. of Greenview: Two cases (One active, one recovered)
• M.D. of Smoky River: 67 cases (Three active, 54 recovered, ten deaths)
• Big Lakes County: 36 cases (One active, 33 recovered, two deaths)
• M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (All recovered)
• Northern Sunrise County: Three cases (All recovered)
• M.D. of Peace: Seven cases (Six recovered, one death)
• Clear Hills County: One case (Fatal)
• County of Northern Lights: One case (Recovered)
• Mackenzie County: 32 cases (Eight active, 24 recovered)

The province’s number of hospitalization also dropped Thursday, as there are now 65 people in hospital, 10 of which are in ICU. Three people are in hospital in northern Alberta, a decrease of two from Wednesday. Neither of those three cases is in ICU.

The province has tested 3,921 more people over the last 24 hours, including 325 in Northern Alberta. 185,545 Albertans have now been tested in Alberta for COVID-19, 14,244 of which are from Northern Alberta.
