Overflow Cot Program

GPREP to move overflow cot program to Bowes Event Centre

May 15, 2020 | 5:38 PM

The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership says it will be moving its temporary cot overflow program to the Bowes Event Centre (BEC) over the next couple of weeks, bringing it over from the Dave Barr Community Centre.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, GPREP established the overflow shelter program at Dave Barr on March 30 as Rotary House was limited to 50 per cent capacity to meet public health mandates.

Dave Barr was originally chosen as Alberta Health Services had already designated the BEC for other emergency planning needs. With phase one of the province’s relaunch strategy in place, AHS has removed the restriction to allow the move for the cot program to the BEC. This move will also allow for planned community use at Dave Barr to be available in June.

Since being established, the overflow cot program at Dave Barr has seen an average of 36 users per night, where the maximum capacity was 46. The program gives vulnerable residents in the community a cot at a cost of $10 per night. All users are vetted by Rotary House staff prior to being admitted.

GPREP adds that once the move is finalized in the next two weeks, security and resource workers will be on site 24 hours a day, and that RCMP and Peace Officers will make more patrols in the area. Residents using the shelter space will not be permitted to leave the facility after 11 p.m.

They add that all users are screened for COVID-19 before entering the facility, and anyone showing symptoms is provided with alternative support.
