Emiko “Emi” Halterman passed away peacefully at Prairie Lake Hospice in Grande Prairie with her loving husband by her side, on the 20th of May, 2020, at the age of 81 following complications with kidney disease.
Emi was born on October 18th, 1938 in Langley, BC, and grew up on the sugar-beet farms of southern Alberta. In May of 1963, she married the love of her life, Del, at Lethbridge, Alberta. They lived in Calgary until moving to Peace River in 1967 and then to Grande Prairie in 1969.
Emi’s various occupations included grocery clerk, bank teller/accountant, airline security officer, and manager of the racetrack pari-mutuel betting office at Evergreen Park. Emi excelled at everything she did, not only at work, but in all endeavors, be it cooking, gardening, curling, or fishing. Whenever filleting a string of fresh-caught walleye, she was soon surrounded by a group of admiring onlookers.
To know Emi was to love her, she being widely known for her friendly, spunky spirit, and unique sense of humour. Among her favorite pastimes were curling, camping, fishing, playing Bingo, gardening, card-playing with family & friends, and beating the Las Vegas slot-machines.
Emi is survived by her loving husband Del, brothers Haruo, Ted, and Masami Shigehiro, sisters Elsie Sasaki, Rose Nagata, Ruth Nagata, Peggy Murdoch, and Christine Daniels, along with three generations of adoring nieces and nephews.
Emi was predeceased by her parents Otoichi and Asano Shigehiro, brothers Kyoto, Aigi and Jim Shigehiro, and sister Chiyeko Konno.
Many thanks to the nurses of 3-North at the QEII hospital and at Prairie Lake Hospice for their compassionate care through Emi’s last days.
At Emi’s request, she will be cremated and will not have a funeral.
