Friendship Centre continuing to assess situation after team member tests positive for COVID-19

May 26, 2020 | 5:30 AM

The Grande Prairie Friendship Centre has temporarily closed the Community Kitchen and are running their programs virtually after a team member tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend.

This notice was posted to the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre’s Facebook page on Saturday morning.

The Community Kitchen is a program run by the Friendship Centre and the Salvation Army that provides three meals a day, five days a week to those who need it. It was given a grant from the City of Grande Prairie back in November 2019.

Len Morisette, President of the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre and the Alberta Native Friendship Centre Association says they are currently working with their partners to cover the shortfall due to the closure of the Community Kitchen.

“When you’re an essential service, when you’re operating frontline services like the Community Kitchen, you can’t just shut down because people in your community, vulnerable sector or not, just everybody who accesses that service needs to still access that service. So, the key now is to assess the situation with our partners in Grande Prairie.”

He says they are also working with Alberta Health Services and figuring out a way to re-open when it is safe to do so.

“This is the first time, but it’s definitely not going to be the last time, so with our community, we all need to rally together and just have those donations and stuff for food and whatnot… This is going to be a long-term thing, COVID(-19) is not going away tomorrow, but this just shows us one of the things that we have to fortify for the future.”

He adds that they do always welcome donations but are continuing to work to find what they need from the community right now and will release the information when available.
