Legislature Sitting

Alberta legislature returns Wednesday for spring sitting

EDMONTON – Alberta politicians are heading back to the legislature this week and will sit until late July.

The house will be debating 10 bills while continuing physical distancing and dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Government house leader Jason Nixon says the government will introduce legislation to set maximum timelines on decisions for oil and gas projects, to expand the scope of the victims’ of crime fund, and to expand parental prerogatives in a child’s education.

Nixon says they will continue to observe rules to prevent the spread of COVID-19, such as limiting the number of politicians needed to pass legislation in the house.

During the session, the government will also continue its rollout of the economic recovery plan as it continues to flatten the curve on COVID infections.

“We are resilient people, but the need for government to be laser-focused on job creation, creating certainty for industry and protecting vulnerable Albertans has never been more acute. These will be our main goals as we ease into relaunching the province,” Nixon said Wednesday.

Barber shops, hair salons, retailers and restaurants are now allowed to open, subject to health restrictions.

The next phase of the relaunch is set for June 19, when movie theatres, spas and personal care services can resume.
