Fire advisory still in place for Grande Prairie Forest Area

Jun 5, 2020 | 1:25 PM

UPDATE: AS of 6:22 p.m. June 5, the wildfire hazard in the Grande Prairie Forest Area had been downgraded to low. The fire advisory is still in place.

A fire advisory is still in place in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

This means that safe burning with a permit, safe wood campfires, backyard fire pits, charcoal briquette barbecues, and infrared-style heaters are all still allowed. Burning without a permit or unsafe campfires are not.

Off-highway vehicle use is also still allowed, but riders are asked to clear debris from their machines before riding. They are also asked to carry a fire extinguisher, water and a collapsible shovel.

The current wildfire hazard rating in the Grande Prairie Forest Area is moderate.

Fire watchers say this means fuels are drying and people should use caution when out in the woods.

There was a new fire today in the Saddle Hills area. It has been turned over to the landowner.

There have been 19 fires in the Grande Prairie Forest Area since March 1 that have burned 10 hectares.
