Grande Prairie area adds new COVID-19 cases Friday

There were several new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the Peace Region on Friday, as the province saw an increase of 105 cases for July 16.

Two new cases were reported in the City of Grande Prairie, which now has six active cases. Two cases were reported in Birch Hills County, which are the first two to be reported out of that area. New cases were also added in the MD of Greenview, Clear Hills County and Mackenzie County for July 16.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day July 16 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 23 cases (Six active, 17 recovered)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 13 cases (Six active, seven recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: Two case (One active, one recovered)
  • Birch Hills County: Two cases (Both active)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 72 cases (62 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 47 cases (Three active, 39 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: Six cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: One case (Active)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: One case (Active)
  • Clear Hills County: 18 cases (Eight active, ten recovered)
  • Northern Sunrise County: Four cases (All recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: Three cases (Two active, one recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 73 cases (27 active, 45 recovered, one death)

There are now 859 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta, while 8,193 cases are considered recovered. Two more Albertans have died, bringing the number of fatalities attributed to COVID-19 to 167.

The number of hospitalizations sat at 68, one less than the day prior, however ICU admissions increased by five over the last 24 hours to 13. In the North Zone, two people are in hospital, one of whom is in intensive care.

A total of 6,479 tests have been processed over the last 24 hours, bringing the number of tests administered to 566,972 in Alberta. A total of 39,597 people from Northern Alberta have been tested.

Meanwhile, in the B.C. Peace, BC Hydro says a worker who arrived from Alberta on Monday to the Site C work camp in Fort St. John has tested positive for COVID-19.

The utility says in a news release that the worker was in self-isolation, had not left the camp or had any interaction with the local community.
