Garrett Green the big winner at PBR Built Ford Tough Invitational in Lethbridge

Jul 24, 2020 | 2:41 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Normally the crowd would be on their feet, but Thursday night was a different story.

Fans sat in their cars in the ENMAX Centre parking lot for the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Built Ford Tough Invitational, part of the Canadian Monster Energy Tour.

The evening was the first sporting event in Canada to have fans in attendance. The action was projected on 23-foot screens hung in the unique drive-in theatre setting.

Meeting Creek, Alberta’s Garrett Green came away the big winner of the night, going two-for-two. He won round one after covering Finning Hou’s Deacon (Flying Four Bucking Bulls) for 85.5 points.

For the final round, Green drafted fellow Flying Four Bucking Bulls bovine athlete and 2019 PBR Canada Bull of the Finals, Finning Lil Shorty.

Finning Lil Shorty was unridden in the past four trips, including an out at the 2019 PBR World Finals. Green snapped the bull’s buckoff streak, reaching the requisite eight for an event-best 88-point score.

“After coming off last event like I did, falling off a nice one, I really wanted that redemption,” Green said.

“They weren’t throwing me off tonight.”

Thursday night’s win was Green’s third in Lethbridge. The 28-year-old also won the 5/5 Bucking Battle held at the ENMAX in March of this year.

For last night’s win, Green picked up a cheque for $3,443.78, as well as 80 Canadian and 15 world points. PBR noted that as part of the Shell Rotella ‘Rugged Ride for Charity’ campaign, a $1,000 donation will be made to charity in recognition of Green’s event-best 88-point ride.

Green chose the Ty Pozzobon Foundation as the recipient charity.

With his win, Green gained one spot in the national standings, now sitting at third in the country. He’s now within 70.5 points of number-one ranked Dakota Buttar of Kindersley, Saskatchewan.

PBR COOPER TIRES INVITATIONAL

Earlier in the day Thursday, the ENMAX Centre hosted the PBR Cooper Tires Invitational. This was a fan-less event.

De Winton, Alberta’s Brock Radford and Sonningdale, Saskatchewan’s Ty Ellis tied for the victory by each notching 86 points in the championship round.

Both riders earned a cheque of $2,688.98, as well as 58.5 Canadian and 11.5 world points. The first round did not go so well for the two, with both bucking off.

X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle’s Off The Grid bested Radford in 6.5 seconds, while Ellis was dispatched by Shay Marks’ Family Feud in 3.3 seconds.

Radford and Ellis advanced to the finals based on buckoff time. It was in the championship round when they turned things around and embraced the pressure.

Radford made the eight riding Stuntman Hank of Wild Hoggs Bucking Bulls. Ellis started the championship round with a ride on Carlier Cartel of X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle.

Radford is ranked number two in Canada and is now within 67.5 points of the top ranking held by Dakota Buttar. He started Thursday’s event 100.5 points behind.

In the world standings, Radford gained five positions, going from number 40 to number 35.

The win was the first for Ellis on the Monster Energy our. He is ranked seventh in the Canadian national standings, 187 points behind the number one spot.

As part of the Shell Rotella ‘Rugged Ride for Charity’ initiative, the duo selected the Ty Pozzobon Foundation as the charity to receive a $1,000 donation, just like Garrett Green later in the night.
