Burgers to Beat MS

Grande Prairie goes for another fundraising title with Burgers to Beat MS campaign Thursday

Aug 16, 2020 | 7:00 AM

The MS Society is hoping Grande Prairie can come through like it has for the last seven years for its retooled Burgers to Beat MS campaign, which goes Thursday, August 20 at A&W locations across Canada.

The annual initiative sees A&W donate $2 for every Teen Burger sold on that day to the MS Society, while simultaneously collecting additional donations for the organization.

The campaign is the single largest fundraiser the MS Society puts on every year, with last year bringing in just over $2 million nationwide. The top fundraising location was none other than Grande Prairie, which brought it $66,181 through all city A&W locations. The north side location alone raised over $60,000 during the 2019 campaign.

“The seventh consecutive year of being the top fundraising restaurant,” said Stephanie Mosher, the Senior Director-Community for Western Canada with the MS Society. “We are so grateful to the community in Grande Prairie, and obviously A&W franchisees and their employees for their continued support of the campaign.”

The money raised goes towards Multiple Sclerosis research. Mosher says Canada is one of the most afflicted countries in the world when it comes to MS. On average, 11 Canadians are diagnosed with MS every day. She adds that women are three times more likely to be diagnosed with the disease.

“The work that A&W is doing, and the support that they’re not only raising awareness, but raising funds. Those dollars go a long way.”

“Really, the funds raised through Burgers to Beat MS are critically important.”

Due to the ongoing pandemic, A&W and the MS Society are encouraging folks to order their Teen Burgers to-go this year, either through takeout, drive-thru or through mobile ordering, like Skip the Dishes.

Funds are also being raised through online donations. A&W is also matching all purchases of gift cards as donations to the MS Society.

“This is an unusual time for all Canadians, and we are just so inspired by the ongoing commitment to make a difference in the lives of those living with MS.”

Since the fundraiser started 12 years ago, it has raised over $15 million nationwide. Mosher says they are hoping to break the $16 million plateau in 2020.
