City of Grande Prairie installs new welcome signs

New welcome signs for the north and west gateways to the City of Grande Prairie have officially been installed

The new north-side sign is located south of 132 Avenue on Highway 43 and the new west-side sign is located on the southeast corner of Highway 43 and Range Road 71.

Robert Carrol, the Parks and Transportation Manager for the City of Grande Prairie, says they wanted to make sure that the community was involved in this process when designing the new signs.

“The project started back in 2019, where we did a little bit of public consultation and asked residents about what Grande Prairie means to them and what they loved about the community.”

“We took that information and gave it to our graphic designers, and with that information they came up with three conceptual designs of an entrance feature.”

Once the three conceptual designs were made, members of the community were invited to vote on the best design and give feedback on what they liked about all three designs.

After that process was taken care of, the graphic designer took everyone’s feedback and came up with a final design.

“I think (the new signs) look pretty sharp,” said Carrol. “The (old) signs were probably 25 year old, they were in dire need of replacement.”

The total budget of the project was $150,000, but Carrol says the project came in under budget.

With the project coming under budget, Carrol says that the city plans to use the remaining money to update the pre-existing welcome sign that leads into downtown from 99 Avenue.
