Peace Region farmers can apply for hail insurance premium refunds

Sep 3, 2020 | 2:07 PM

The Agriculture Financial Services Corporation is offering refunds on hail insurance to some farmers.

Farmers who have what AFSC calls “non-viable acres due to excess moisture” can fill out an application for a refund on their 2020 premiums.

This is for both the Hail Endorsement and Straight Hail Insurance.

AFSC adds in a news release non-viable crops are defined as those where the possible yield is not worth what it would cost to harvest them.

“We recognize the challenges many farmers in the North East, North West and Peace region are facing as they deal with back-to-back years of excessive moisture.,” says AFSC interim CEO Jerry Bouma in that same release.

“Many AFSC staff are also producers, so we understand the frustration and disappointment farmers feel when they can’t harvest the crop or conditions simply won’t allow it to grow. We realize this won’t fix the problem, but it is something AFSC can do to help farmers impacted by these extreme moisture conditions,”

Applications will be taken until September 11.
