Hockey Canada announces cancelation of 2020 Women’s Under-18 Championship in Dawson Creek

Sep 3, 2020 | 2:20 PM

Hockey Canada says that the 2020 Women’s Under-18 World Hockey Championship that was to be held in Dawson Creek has been cancelled because of the pandemic.

Spirit River’s Dayle Ross and Brooke Disher from Fort St. John were both been invited to the camp.

The 2020 Canadian Tire Para Hockey Cup in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia and the 2020 World Junior A Challenge in Cornwall, Ontario have also been cancelled.

In a news release, Hockey Canada stated, “While a tremendous amount of work has gone into planning the fall 2020 events, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has created a position where there is no further option other than to cancel three events.”

Hockey Canada CEO Tom Renney and Hockey Canada President and COO Scott Smith released a joint statement saying, “At various rates, provinces from coast-to-coast-to-coast have started moving ahead with their phased re-opening, but as it has been since the season was cancelled, Hockey Canada’s priority remains the health and safety of all participants and the general public.”

“We believe the decision to cancel these three events is the safest decision given the ongoing uncertainty of the pandemic at the local level, as well as the international implications associated with these events.”

Hockey Canada says that the plan is to have all three of the cancelled events return to the respective communities in 2021.
